SMTP relay use case
SMTP relay for printers, scanners, and devices
Printers, scanners, cameras, NAS devices, and alerting systems often need to send email but do not manage delivery well on their own. SMTP relay gives them an authenticated outbound path.
DevicesPrinters, scanners, cameras, NAS boxes, and monitoring systems.
PortsUseful when direct SMTP is blocked or alternate sending ports are needed.
AuthenticationOne relay account can support controlled sending from many locations.
Why devices often need a relay
Many devices can create a message, but they are not good at reputation, routing, or adapting to network restrictions. A relay service accepts the message from the device, authenticates it, and handles onward delivery.
Common device use cases
- Scan-to-email from multifunction printers
- Camera or NAS alerts
- Server and application notifications
- Monitoring alerts from branch offices or remote sites
What to check before setup
Confirm that the device supports SMTP authentication and note which outgoing ports it allows. If it cannot use port 25, a relay with alternate SMTP ports is especially useful.
Typical flow
- 1. Device creates mailA scanner, camera, or app creates the notification.
- 2. Relay accepts itThe device authenticates and sends to the SMTP relay.
- 3. Relay delivers itThe relay handles outbound delivery to the recipient server.
